As many of you are probably already aware, funding constraints, and the resignation of our administrator (to enable her to seek full-time employment), means that we are currently not preparing a full semester programme for January to June 2012. One or two of your favourite programmes may still be run, depending on interest, so please do keep an eye on our web site, http://www.kapitiwea.org.nz/, particularly the January to June Courses, and the What's Changed link (our blog: http://kcwea.blogspot.com/), for such information. Any changes to this, or individual programmes being run, will be publicised on the web pages, in our blog, and with fliers nearer the time.

As our last course for the year is now running, our Office is closed until further notice, but our email, mail and the answerphone, are all still being monitored regularly.

Shakespeare - Winter's Tale

Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale is our last course for the year starts on Tuesday (4 weeks 2 - 4pm).
Remember that it is not at the usual venue, but, as advertised in the brochure, at the Paraparaumu Library Meeting Room instead.
The office will be open on Monday 10am to noon for any last minute bookings, or you can book via our web site, or simply turn up on the day.

Funding constraints, and the resignation of our administrator for full time employment, mean that we are currently not preparing a full semester programme for January to June 2012.

Any changes to this, or individual programmes being run, will be publicised here and on our web pages.

Please note that our Reading Shakespeare (Titus Andronicus) has now been shifted back to our normal Shakespeare venue, the Kapiti Community Centre.

Our Creative Digital Photography course on Saturday 17th April is now full.
However we do have other April offerings:
Chinese Brush Painting (Landscapes) starts 10th Apr
There's a talk about the Marriage of Figaro, also on the 10th - learn about the opera, then go and see a performance in Wellington next month.
Still room on the field trip on the 22nd - combine a morning learning about the art of bonsai, followed by lunch at the Cafe California, with an afternoon tour, including the canopy walk and the 800 year old rimu, in the Otari-Wilton's Bush Native Botanic Garden.

Early May sees an introduction to Astrology, and the next in the reading Shakespeare series - Titus Andronicus

This is the upstairs section behind the main admin block at the college.

Many thanks to Kapiti College for allowing us use of the rooms. This has allowed this course to proceed with lower numbers than would previously have been necessary.

With Spanish for Beginners nearly finished, and only a couple of weeks to go for NZ Sign Language, that's our courses over for yet another semester.
We hope that you enjoyed our offerings.

The programme for next semester is nearly ready for the printers and will be despatched over the Christmas break.
The office reopens 18th January ready to take your bookings for the even wider range of courses being offered, the first for next year starting on February 8th.

November 2009 Courses

As we wind down for the year there are three final courses starting in November.

Bus trip to Pencarrow - the Pencarrow Lighthouse is one of Wellington’s landmarks with a fascinating history. Join WEA on a trip to one of the region’s wildest and most beautiful places to enjoy views and wildlife. BYO lunch, walking shoes and wear suitable clothing.

“To the bitter end”. Bob Stott, journalist, editor and publisher, will explore the origin of this and many other sayings, clichés and catchwords that have helped to enrich the English language. Saturday 14th November 2-4pm at Paraparaumu Library.

On Sunday 15th November, a talk by Gael Ferguson, KCDC, will use issues about climate to examine decisions being made locally about the environment and how to deal with climate change.
This Environmental Ethics course is our final one for the year, and at the moment, numbers are light, so if you are thinking of attending, please enrol now rather than turn up on the day and find it has been cancelled because we didn't know you were coming.

Unfortunately, the Beginners Italian course scheduled to start next week, has had to be cancelled due to the tutor advising she is no longer available to run the course at this time.
Those enrolled will be notified.
We may be able to reschedule the course for next semester, watch out for the Jan-Jun brochure later in this year.

Stop Press: we may be able to negotiate a different day/time for the course to continue, but suspect this could be rather hard to coordinate at this late stage.

Early October Courses

Eugene Onegin is the subject of Peter Baillie’s popular talk on up-coming operas. The story of a dreamy country girl who falls for her ideal man only to be rejected, is set in fashionable St. Petersberg. The colourful music of Tchaikovsky reflects the contrasts of Pushkin’s novel. A not-to-be-missed event. October 4th at 2-4pm, Parklands Hall, Waikanae, just in time for the Wellington season of the opera.

A fascinating course by Peter Jackson, psychologist, looks at all those aspects of the senses that you wish you understood. It’s just an introduction to psychology but it will leave you wanting to know more. Six Tuesday’s from 6th October, 2-4pm at Paraparaumu Library. If you haven't yet enrolled, we would appreciate advance notice of your intention to attend as numbers may not be sufficient to proceed.

Did you know there was a Parrot Ranch in Levin? A bus trip run by the WEA on 8th October will visit the Ranch for a guided tour of the 300+ species of these colourful exotic birds from all over the world.

Life Member

Last night past and present Committee members were pleased to meet to celebrate the presentation of Life Membership of the Kapiti Coast WEA to Basil Pritchett who has recently retired from the Committee, latterly in the role of Treasurer, but having served for many years in various positions, the Minutes first recording his appointment as Secretary-Organiser in November 1993 for 10 hours per week for an initial period of 3 months.
Basil's knowledge and expertise will be missed, but he will no doubt be seen around attending many of the courses he has helped make possible over the years.

WEA’s ‘coffee and craft’ courses are proving very popular. Held in the warm friendly atmosphere of the Farmyard Café at Lindale, the next one shows you how to make a book. Tuesday 25 August at 10am, $12 including coffee and a scone.

‘Love’s Labour's Lost’ is Shakespeare’s freshest early comedy, full of wit and irony. Join the fun in WEA’s popular Shakespeare course, starting 25 August 2-4pm.

Is an organic business a niche market of the way of the future and is it sustainable? Take this opportunity to find out from the managing director of a successful organic retail company. Sunday 30 August, 2pm.

WEA’s popular Music Appreciation course starts on Wednesday 2 September at 9.45am. Join tutor Jane Godfrey as she explores music from Europe and South America, but be quick, places filling up.

Stories about the Trojan wars and that heroic age are depicted in Homer’s brilliant epic poetry. Popular historian Dr. Matthew Trundle will be exploring the Iliad and the Odessey on two Sundays 6 & 13 September, 1.30-4pm. Don’t miss these great talks.

Anthony Dreaver will be continuing his historical exploration of Wellington’s west coast on 10 and 17 September, plus a field trip on 19 September. See our beautiful part of the country with fresh eyes.

Own a bike? Learn how to maintain it in tip-top condition with cycle technician, Matthew Nicol. Monday 14 September, 6.30- 9 pm at the ‘On yer bike’ shop.

Literature for fun. Join Amanda Hanan, teacher, writer and performer, to read and enjoy a popular New Zealand play. Bring out the creator in you! Four Fridays, 16 September – 9 October.

Kapiti Coast WEA has a course coming up on Sunday 2 Aug on Shintoism.
It will be held from 2 – 4pm in the Kapiti Community Centre, Ngahina St, Paraparaumu.
There is also a second dip into this field on Sunday 9 August at 1.30pm when the focus will be on Hinduism – bringing the chance to find out where Yoga fits in – as well as many other facets of this fascinating Religion.

NB course viability decisions have to be made at latest two days prior to the commencement of the course.
